General Grievous - "Oppression" (2015)

GENERAL GRIEVOUS "Oppression"

Year: 2015

And finally for today, another band which didn't provide me with much info about themselves (expect they started playing slow sludge metal together in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, 3 years ago), but their music is good. Haven't heard such powerful sludge metal from anywhere in former USSR for a long time. According to the band, my blog means a lot for them, and it's the only blog they'd like to be on.

Killwave - "The Calling" (video)

One more band which plays in a genre that typically doesn't get featured on here much, but I think I should post them nevertheless. Killwave are a post-punk / industrial rock collective from Chicago which released a full-length album titled "Death By Distortion" not so long ago. You can listen to it on bandcamp, if you're interested, or visit their official site.

coutoentrelesdents - DIY anarcho-rap collective from France

Of course, this Shai Hulud isn't the well-known American hardcore band, but a rap artist who's a part of coutoentrelesdents (literally "knife between the teeth") - an anarchist rap/punk collective from France who reads my blog and appreciates my work of deconstructing the cliches around BM and hardcore. It isn't the kind of music that's posted on my blog normally, and the message of their lyrics probably won't be accessible to those of you who don't speak French (which is probably the majority of my readers), but I still appreciate their efforts and think they should be mentioned on here. Their releases are freely available off their bandcamp page.

Metallic crust/hardcore/punk demos - a brief roundup, part 1

I continue to receive a lot of demos which are either not quite "political", or not quite "metal", or simply lack the needed information about the band/release, so I increasingly become reluctant of posting such stuff. Some of these demos, however, are quite interesting, and should be mentioned on here, at least as a part of "all-in-one" entry:
  • Insurrectionist - "Pseudo-Anarchy" - an young one-man project from Sterling Heights (Detroit area, Michigan). The author describes the sound on "Pseudo-Anarchy" as "black/speed metal", but as for me, it sounds more like punk than anything else. Anyway, he does support the RABM movement, and wants the greater RABM community to review his work as well.
  • Herida Profunda - s/t LP 2013 - metallic crust/hardcore with political lyrics, 3 band members are from Poland and 1 from UK. They haven't provided much information beside that, but their music is quite good.
  • (A)Hellskum(E) - demo MMXV - metallic crust from Hobart, Australia. Again, not much further info is available.
  • Grusterror - "Desolation" - blackened grindcore/crust from Marseille, featuring some members of Filthy Charity. Their lyrics are about both serious political things, and stuff like heroic fantasy (or just irony/fun at times).
  • A Ghastly Menace - "Horror Grind" EP and "New Gods/New Monsters" LP. While the first EP is more or less typical grindcore, the LP is quite interesting, and I can't come up with any better label for it than "Horror Metal". The project comes from the anarcho-crust background, and even though the author deliberately haven't made it overtly political, it still does reflect his political views in some way (he was an anarchist some time ago, but currently he refers to himself only as "skeptic", and I can understand why...) If you need more info about AGM, just ask me.
There are many more demos like these in my inbox, some of which waiting for a review for several months already. Unfortunately I don't have enough free time to properly review all of them (especially considering the usual problems with them which I mentioned before), but hopefully I'll make at least a brief roundup like this one in the future.

Violet Cold - "Fight For Freedom! (comp.)" (2015)

VIOLET COLD "Fight For Freedom! (compilation)"

Year: 2015
Genre: Post-Black Metal, Blackgaze
Country: Azerbaijan

Track List:
  1. Red Ocean
  2. Void
  3. Fight For Freedom!
  4. Everything You Can Imagine Is Real...
  5. Light Years Separate Us From Home
  6. Desperate Dreams
  7. I See The Air You Breathe

The second thing that I'd like to show you today is a post-BM/blackgaze from Azerbaijan. Yes, there's a project from Azerbaijan which self-identifies with RABM, which was a total surprise to me. All the punk, hardcore, and black metal bands from Azerbaijan, combined together, can be counted on hands, and I really haven't expected that my blog will get a band from there one day. Yet it has happened.

Violet Cold is an one-man project from Baku started by Emin Guliyev in 2013. Initially it sounded nothing like metal, more like post-rock or electronica. This one is not a real release, more like a compilation made by a maintainer of our RABM group on VK, apparently with Emin's permission. It contains tracks from the latest "Red Ocean" and "Fight For Freedom" singles, as well as other recent releases of Violet Cold, which are all post-black metal.

The material presented on there is just avesome. Violet Cold is easily one of the best of my personal discoveries in 2015, and probably will be one of the best post-BM projects on the world scale, if only the quality of recording was a bit better. Highly recommended!

Unfortunately I couldn't get to post anything here during the last few days, but maybe it's for good, because right now I don't want to make political posts anyway. Better look at a couple of excellent albums which I found during these days, and let's start with this one:

"ANTLERS is a new band from Leipzig but the folks behind this outfit are not Germans, they are from Spain and Catalonia. Well, I’m a bit lost here but maybe the members, who played in such renowned acts like EKKAIA, COP ON FIRE or SANGRE DE MUERDAGO  (which are still active), live in Leipzig for some time…I don’t know. Whatever - these two songs proof again, that punks can play black metal. The music ranges from atmospheric midtempo black metal towards the fast stuff. Due to the highly left wing political background of their ex-bands it seems to be sure, that ANTLERS is another bm-band which is cool (aka antifascist) plus their music sounds fucking awesome. Really looking forward to hear more!" (MORBUS BLAST BEATS)

After reading all this, I naturally wanted to check out if this band really is as good as it was described. And yes, "A Gaze Into The Abyss" didn't disappoint me at all. I'm posting it without the band's permission, which rarely happens on my blog nowadays, so I think I shouldn't post the direct download link here. It's fully streamable on bandcamp and youtube anyway.

P.S. There's another good band with a similar name and somewhat similar sound - Antlers As Roots from Fort Wayne, IN. They released only one demo in 2012 and then put everything on hiatus. They're probably not anarchist or "red", but they're "green" for sure.

Dödläge - s/t 7'' (2015)

DODLAGE "s/t"

Year: 2015
Genre: Metallic Crust
Country: USA

Track List:
  1. Stench of Death
  2. Man Made Hell
  3. Expendable Population
  4. Poison Control
  5. Illusory Fear
  6. No Sacred Ground
  7. Haunted
  8. Bleeding Out
  9. Life in a Cage
  10. Sea of Radiation
So I returned home from the May Day rally, which was pretty boring this time. There aren't many interesting photo/video reports on the net too, but that's normal - as I have noticed, most interesting stuff usually pops up after one or two days after the 1st of May. Of course I'll post here anything I find worth posting, but not now, as I'm way too tired.

Meanwhile you can check out this 7'' by a band from Portland, OR. It's short but sounds no worse than the best examples of Scandnavian metallic crust/d-beat.
