Frostland Tales - "Nostalgie, melancholie, smrt" (2015)

FROSTLAND TALES "Nostalgie, melancholie, smrt"

Country: Czech Republic

Track List:
  1. Nostalgie (Nostalgy)
  2. Melancholie (Melancholy)
  3. Smrt (Death)
DOWNLOAD

Here's the final release from Frostland Tales. According to the person who sent me this, the suicide story of FT's only member wasn't a bad joke - he actually did this. Don't know really what else to say... probably should just note it contains 3 tracks of pretty much the same lo-fi "melancholic monotonous black metal" which can be found on his earlier releases which all were featured on here before. R.I.P.

One of my readers recently made a good observation that the Czech underground scene is quicky becoming  a new major RABM powerhouse. Taking in account how many good Czech bands I've posted on here, especially in the last couple of years, it's hard not to agree with him. This compilation, featuring 7 Czech anarcho-friendly BM bands, is yet another good proof to this.

Its name, "Jdi a dívej se", is a reference to a well-known ant-fascist movie "Come and See" by Elem Klimov. It's going to be released as double vinyl LP on 1st of July, and will be distributed by Day After Records. More info (in English and Czech) can be found on its bandcamp page.

There are numerous bands under the name "Satan", some of which are playing black metal, some aren't. Fun fact: there even was an obscure Russian pop band called "Satana" formed in early 1990s. Beside the probably most well-known NWOBHM Satan, S.A.T.A.N. from Poland, and many other bands under this name, there are "possessed punks" from Grenoble (France) who started playing together in 2009 and released their debut full-length album not so long ago.

Gut Instinct were an obscure hardcore/metal band with lyrics mostly focused on anti-racism, founded in Baltimore in 1989. Their early songs were more or less plain hardcore, but they became more metal-influenced around 1991-92, and their recordings from that period sound quite ahead of their time. I found out about them while searching for the backstory of this photo:

What I found instead was the full discography of Gut Instinct, released by  A389 Recordings in 2006. It's roughly a hour of music, freely available on youtube. Pretty good stuff even by today's standards, and I think it'd fit in the "retrospective" section of my blog pretty well.

Vorbkt - Tragedy

Vorbkt - "Tragedy"

Year: 2014
Genre: Depressive Black Metal
Country: Canada

Track List
  1. Torn Inside
  2. Then I Began Marching Towards An Extinct Race
  3. Lay Deceased Under a Full Moon
  4. Tragedy

In keeping with my Canadian theme, another cool artist from up here goes by the name of Vorbkt. It's a solo project and produced by someone from out in Newfoundland. It's your usual DSBM music but simply just done well. Vorbkt has more recent releases, including a split with Cult of Mourning but this one is by far my favourite. I spoke to them once via reddit and they seem pretty cool.

For fans of raw DSBM, 'Tragedy' is a great release to add to your collection.

Mad Trapper - Kill Us, Start Anew (2013)

Mad Trapper - "Kill us, Start Anew"

Year: 2013
Genre: Metalcore
Country: Canada

Track List
  1. Born of Hatred
  2. Ego Weendigo
  3. Pyres
  4. Innocent
  5. Fools
  6. Burning Moth
  7. Meaning(less)
  8. Magnum Opus
For those who might see the term 'metalcore' and go "eeeeeegghh", I totally understand. There's a huge influx of metalcore still in a lot of scenes that just does the same open note breakdown. I normally wouldn't post something like that here but these guys are exceptional in that they do metalcore "properly". That being extreme metal influenced by hardcore. This falls more on the metal end of the spectrum in that it has some very thrashy riffs combined alongside death metal/grindcore drumming.

I've played with Mad Trapper a bunch and they're really good guys and while they might not be anarchist or explicitly left-wing, they certainly maintain a decent worldview that sets them apart from the usual macho tough dude band.

They also have a new release coming out soon which has a single currently up for download.

Wounds - In The Valley Of Death (2015)

Wounds - "In the Valley of Death"

Year: 2015
Genre: Blackened Death Metal
Country: Canada

Track List:
  1. One Womb
  2. Trailing Hades
  3. Fare the Well
Another band from my area, Wounds is a punishing black metal band with heavy death metal influences. I'm unsure of much of the band's history other than I believe they're new and that the vocalist was the drummer of the band 'Misfortune" whom I had posted on here before. My band Lapsaria also played with them recently alongside Panzerfaust and Vow of Thorns.

I have really dug this release since they put it out earlier this year. Each song is pretty well constructed, with dynamic changes and slick production. Any fan of more atmospheric or mid-tempo'ed black metal will dig this but it will also appeal very much to people across the spectrum.

Wasi'chu - S/T (2015)

Wasi'chu "Wasi'chu"

Year: 2015
Genre: Hardcore punk, Crust
Country: Canada

Track List:
  1. Embers
  2. 1789
  3. Reclaim
  4. Exodium
  5. Liberté, égalité, fraternité
  6. Static
  7. Moths

It's been awhile since I've posted and I apologize. I have been extremely busy with school, recording bands, and trying to get some shit in my life together. I will be posting a bunch of music momentarily so stay tuned.

Wasi-chu is a band from my homecity of Windsor, Ontario where I'm proud to say that it has one of the best music scenes in all of Canada. Wasi-chu is the collaborative effort of a variety of musicians I've played alongside but is mostly fronted and composed by Judah Zakoor and Mattu Findlater of the similar and now defunct project Valerie Page. Also in the band are Sean Fox of a variety of groups (Namely the crust band Uncle Ray) and Matt Menard, a skater dude of ten thousand more bands (My favourite always being Get Bent.) now living in Montreal. I also record music with Mattu under our project with the joke name of Narcthrone. We take ourselves seriously though... I swear...

As with these projects and most of the projects that they get into, they're explicitly left-wing/anarchist/anti-capitalist in nature and feature a chunk of samples from various political media. The music is heavy, tight, and melodically sound.

Mur - Athabasca (2015)

MUR "Athabasca"

Year:  2015
Genre:  Atmospheric Black Metal
Country:  USA

Track List
  1. Ungulate Flesh & Blood (Stirring in the Herd)
  2. Dragged Across the Forest God's Teeth
  3. Athabasca (A Calf is Culled)
Hailing from Minnesota, one-man project Mur has released an impressive album.  While not explicitly anarchist, the album does hold to radical environmentalism.  It is, in fact, a concept album exploring the relationship between the wolf and the American Bison.  With sounds ranging from doom to drone to aggressive, Cascadian style black metal, Mur covers a lot of ground.  Take the time to check this one out.  It is well worth it.

Wisent - Gros Morne (2015)

WISENT "Gros Morne"

Year:  2015
Genre:  Ambient Black Metal
Country:  Germany

Track List:
  1. Amarok
  2. Gros Morne
  3. Ilulissat
  4. Danau Toba
Wisent is back with another album, their second.  Only four tracks long, Gros Morne still rings in at over 50 minutes.  They have not lost any of their political edge and they have grown musically.  Politically, they are as hardcore as any band I know, supporting total liberation for all, including all species.  They are radical environmentalists and anarchists, and wear their heart on their green and black sleeve.  Musically, the album is tighter and more cohesive, while at the same time being more experimental.  Check out the album over at their Bandcamp and support them with a donation.  More details on their political manifesto are there as well.
